The question „which concrete body part is subject to our supposed command between language and desire?“ leads to the tongue, which is at the center of Burckhardt’s video piece “a body that only embodies”. The tongue is not possessed but seen for what it is: a body that embodies itself completely. Against the background of an essay by the anthropologist Jonathan Echeverri Zuluaga, dealing with the appropriation of the body between colonialism, border (‐transgression) and eroticism, Burckhardt interlaces written and spoken word with the moving image of the tongue to address how one may seize power over a body.

Die Frage „welcher konkrete Körperteil unterliegt unserem vermeintlichen Kommando zwischen Sprache und Begehren?“ führt zur Zunge, die im Zentrum von Burckhardts Videoarbeit „a body that only embodies“ steht. Die Zunge wird nicht besessen, sondern als das gesehen, was sie ist: ein Körper, der sich vollständig verkörpert. Vor dem Hintergrund eines Essays des Anthropologen Jonathan Echeverri Zuluaga, der sich mit der Aneignung des Körpers zwischen Kolonialismus, Grenz(-überschreitung) und Erotik beschäftigt, verschränkt Burckhardt geschriebenes und gesprochenes Wort mit dem bewegten Bild der Zunge, um zu thematisieren, wie sich Macht im eigenen Körper manifestiert.

Kirstin Burckhardt (b. in South Africa) is a visual artist combining video, drawing and performance with sound and spoken word. Critically drawing upon her training in psychotherapy and neuroscience, her practice addresses body as an interpersonal fact and friction, continuously rubbing against the questions: »Do you have a body? Are you a body? Are you making your body?«. Continuously questioning what defines a body, her artistic research focuses on interpersonal space as a locus of sensitivity that surpasses the body-mind duality in favor of empathy, transgenerational trauma, and the power of imagination.
